Alex likes cars. I don't drive but this is the neatest car I would ever. It may not be his smallest car but this one is street legal. I caught it at rest at Bondi as part of the warm up to the 1996 City to Surf.
Our task, in the interest of Gonzo Journalistic Excellence, was to discover how fast the course could be covered in high performance Italian sports cars. Steve Moneghetti holds the bipedal record of 40:03, set in 1991. South Africa's John Morapedi won in 1996 with a time of 40:19. The other 44,689 runners didn't. The rules are similar to that of the HSC, the culmination of Sydney-sider's Secondary Education - if you finish you get a bit of paper and your name in a newspaper.
The four-wheeled record stands at a little under seven minutes. You have to be lucky enough to catch a few lights and possess the skill to hug a couple of corners - take advantage of that rubber. A dream run through Double Bay doesn't hurt either. As a seasoned passenger my advice is don't talk to the driver and hang on like living hell.
Thanks to Lloydy for a bird's eye view (and a good barbie) and the cops for having a sense of humour. As you can see it was pretty close coming down Campbell Parade and then the crowd picked up a tad.
Thanks to Alex for a place to store my Ishtek stuff and the Pantera for a place full of Gs.
